Working to establish wildlife corridors across the UK
We work in partnership with local farmers, landowners and communities to establish wildlife corridors across the UK, planting trees to improve regional biodiversity, and to increase local ownership and stake in the environment through leading community planting sessions. We’re all about laying down roots!
Wilding Network is not just about increasing wild spaces for nature, but also finding our own wilder natures!
We rely on donations and volunteers to support our work. If you’d like to join our volunteer network to plant trees and become a steward of the land, or if you have some space to wild and want to partner with us, please get in touch today, or donate to help us to continue our work to establish nature corridors locally and regionally.
Why trees?
As each tree grows it absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere (up to 48 pounds a year). Trees build themselves from carbon through photosynthesis - it is stored inside of the tree itself and below the ground over time, giving us a net reduction of atmospheric carbon dioxide and increasing soil carbon sequestration. Tree planting is therefore a key nature-based solution to mitigate climate change and address biodiversity loss, particularly in the UK, which is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world.
One tree can sequester one tonne (1000kg) of carbon dioxide by the time it reaches 40 years old. To put this in perspective, an average person in the UK emits 10 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.
But the benefits of trees are so much more than simply off-setting carbon!
Native oaks (pedunculate and sessile) support a huge diversity of life - 2,300 wildlife species.
Our trees provide habitat for countless birds, insects and mammals. They moderate our air temperature, help reduce soil erosion, stabilise banks, reduce flooding and clean the very air we breathe! Trees and green spaces are also vital for our mental wellbeing, reducing stress, fatigue, anxiety and depression.
“It is our responsibility to do everything within our power to create a planet that provides a home not just for us, but for all life on Earth.”
David Attenborough
